Some see the incoming rush of cars advertising fueleconomy of 40 mpg and aren’t impressed, commenting that cars were just as efficient years ago. In honor of Earth Day, we decided to take a closer look at that theory, compiling a list of the Top 10 most efficient 2001 model year mass production vehicles, along with Motor Trend test data and safety scores. The way fuel economy numbers were calculated has changed since these 2001 vehicles went on sale, meaning the modern mpg numbers are much lower than the figures you’ll see on the Monroney. Makes me wonder what have we done in the last 10 years of automotive history...

I was really hoping the Prius would be on top of the list. Its good to see that at least it was in the top three. But out of that list the Prius is one of the most sold.

Most sold over the last 10 years, and it wasn't ranked 1st 10 years ago, but this list is mainly dominated by Honda's which is quite the surprise.. as if it were to be shown today top 10 list.. its all just hybrids and ev's...

But the MPG ratings haven't drastically changed either..
