East Rider, you, i believe, told me what charges the Prius small battery, but would you tell me again? Not the gas engine as I recall...

That's right. There is no "alternator" like a conventional car.

The 12 V battery is charged from the HV battery whenever the car is "ON" by way of a voltage converter, usually called an inverter.

The small battery does not turn the engine over to start it. It only runs computers and accessories.
