Can anyone tell me if the gas engine battery is being charged when the gas engine is NOT running?

Say when sitting in the driveway, and sitting still? Thank you!

Switch on and ready light on!

The 12 V battery is charged by a voltage "inverter" who's feed is the HV hybrid battery.
It should charge any time the vehicle is in "ready" mode.
You can easily verify that with a voltmeter.

Easy Rider, thank you very much for the reply! This morning my Prius car battery had no power at all. The car's dome light had been left on for about 3-days and the car not driven. I had been reading the manual in the car and failed to turn if off! It took several hours to charge the battery enough to get the start and ready lights to come on, and I could drive the auto.

Since the car wasn't in "ready', I guess the battery couldn't be charged by the hybid battery?

Correct. And that is a good thing.....because you don't want to discharge the hybrid battery until it is completely flat because that is hard on it. There are protections to keep that from happening in "normal" use.

NOW....it would be a really good idea to manually charge the 12 V back up to a full charge with a small charger over a couple of days.

And if it is more than 4 years old, it might be a good idea to start shopping for a new one.

Again, thank you very much Easy Rider. I have hooked up a small "Battery Tender" .750 ma 12 volt charger to the Prius, and I can leave it there several days. It's a 2015 model Prius so hopefully the car battery is good for another year or two. I love driving the Prius! Thanks for your help.

I have a 2013 Prius C & just got this problem today. What is wrong? Driving along when noticed the engine wasn't shutting off. Drove 15 miles at 30mph & it ran fine. After turning key off it still restarts but won't keep running. It dies when put in gear or after idling for 10 sec.. will restart briefly every time I push on gas pedal. Does anyone know what could be the problem?

There are a LOT of things that could cause similar symptoms.
It is not likely that a forum like this can help......if you don't already have a good handle on how the car works.

How many miles on it ?
Any warning lights come on ?

Has the 12 V battery ever been changed ? That would be a good place to start looking.
