7 week old prius and garage door ripped of spoiler

Just got a prius 2 7 weeks ago and husband forgot rear hatch was open and brand new 2012 prius spoiler broken off by garage door. Took to the toyota repair shop today $581.00 to repair. Why does the darn rear hatdh open so high as high as the garage door? not happy at all.:(
