Since it is a plug-in hybrid, it is more advanced than my non plug-in. The basic system has been around since Toyota brought it out in the US in 2001. The software that controls it has advanced. In 2001, the best mileage I could get was 55 mpg. My 2018 has averaged 60 mpg over the first 28000 miles. So advanced is what you are comparing it to.
