Default is XW20 slow or fast? Neither?

I've read reports the 1.5 litre second generation prius is sluggish and struggles to overtake other vehicles at highway speeds, but also read that it does a quarter mile in 10 seconds. They can't both be true.

So how fast or slow is the second generation prius? What other cars is it similar to in terms of speed/power?

Impossible to give a good answer to that; too many unknowns.....and too much personal opinion involved.

No Prius (or other hybrid for that matter) is built for "speed".

If you are looking for speed, look elsewhere.

I don't remember seeing any serious complaints.

I am not looking for speed. Years ago, I had a little Mitsubishi Mirage which was the most economical car I have ever owned. Problem was it really struggled uphill. I don't want to drive something that causes traffic jams nor do I want to be stuck at an intersection that I can't get out of quickly enough because someone else is speeding.

Surely there are other cars with comparable performance/driveability for reference...

It is still all subjective.
Drive one and form your own opinion.

I find my C to be quite capable when needed.
With both the electric and gas motors supplying power, it is quite zippy.

Not enough time to find a highway or hill on a test drive, but I did find my answer elsewhere.

For anyone else wondering, I've been told it drives like something with a 1.8 litre petrol engine of the same era. Good enough for me.
