Canada has had a certified pre-owned program in-place for years but for the first time ever, it now covers hybrids. This program is the first of its kind in Canada as Honda
do not offer certified pre-owned hybrid vehicles.
"Hybrids are as reliable, and as easy to own and drive, as conventional vehicles – so it’s natural to build on our program for certified pre-owned vehicles with this new initiative tailored to those built around Toyota’s proven hybrid technology." Said, Tony Wearing, Senior Managing Director, Toyota Canada. Toyota customers in the US have had this option so it is about time that Canadians get the same choice. The Japanese automaker has sold over 69,000 hybrids in Canada since 2000, when the Prius arrived.
All certified, pre-owned Toyotas go through a 127-point inspection before they undergo mechanical and appearance reconditioning. The vehicles are covered by a seven day/1,500 km exchange privilege. The purchase price includes a free oil/filter change, membership in Club Toyota, a minimum of 12 months/20,000 kms powertrain and roadside assistance coverage. This is all backed by an eight-year/160,000 km warranty on all hybrid components.
While Toyota commands the hybrid market in Canada they have to contend with a market base that is passionate about diesel vehicles. Diesel fuel is generally cheaper in Canada than regular gasoline and is as such more popular in cars and SUVS than it is in the US. Canadians don't buy as many diesels as Europeans but still more than Americans. Volkswagen
Canada has also had a certified program for over five years to lure in people in search of a guaranteed used car that sips fuel.
