has just anncounced with the Southwestern Athletic Conference that the Japanese automaker will be the primary sponsor of the men's football championship this fall.The will be presenting the regular season and playoff games. "Toyota is excited to serve as title sponsor of the 2012 SWAC” stated Jim Colon, VP of Toyota product communications for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A.
The automaker is using the sponsorship as a way to spread awareness of their Green Initiative, a campaign for the African-American community. SWAC is a division that consists mainly of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Commissioner Duer Sharp is excited for the partnership. “We are excited to continue our relationship with Toyota and are looking forward to the championship in December.”
During the 2011 season, Toyota was the official automotive partner of SWAC. They are taking over the title sponsorship, which includes naming rights, from Farmers Insurance. Jeep and Dodge have previously held the role, in 2003 and 2004 respectively.
Since 2009 the Green Initiative campaign has gone to over 50 HBCU schools. The visits feature an immersive experience with hybrid vehicle test drives. There is also a simulation of a recycling center. To make things fun for everyone Toyota features environmentally friendly games and prizes. Some future events will feature a lecture led by experts on environmental issues, who are African-American.
