Question Your experience with "Free maintenance"

This was one of the benefits of my new Prius. I'm at about due for a maintenance check, and wonder if the dealers just use this as an opportunity for finding something wrong with the car, or if there are hidden charges. On my first Prius, I used to have these checks done by the wonderful folks who change my regular/snow tires. There were rarely any surprises, and costs for filters, fluids, etc. were very reasonable.

What's been your experience?

It's good to be alert for ulterior motives in things like this.......but no need to be paranoid.

If it really IS a new car, most everything is covered under warranty even if they do find something else wrong.

It really IS free service (included in the price of the car).

Only downside I've had is that it really confuses them if you want the oil changed a little sooner than what they recommend.

Took my wife's Prius v for the first free service yesterday. Service Manager told me "no oil change but tire rotation and multi check up. So very quick one!". It took them 1.5 hours despite I had an appointment and was there 15 minutes before the appointment. Anyway, service manager reported "Everything is fine. Brake pads, tires and what not are like brand new!!" Thank God! The car has 3000 miles and I didn't expect any issues. It was free and that was the best part of it

Well it really wasn't free because it cost you about two hours of your time.

I split the difference with mine.
Do both tire rotation and oil change about 7000 miles.
That eliminates one unnecessary visit.
