Default Prius Towing Capacity?

My 2015 Prius Owners Manual states, on page 328, "Toyota does not recommend towing a trailer"..."Toyota also does not recommend the installation of a tow hitch or the use of a tow hitch carrier for a wheelchair, scooter, bicycle, etc.".

I have been told the 2016 Prius's have a Toyota approved towing rating of 1,600 lb. Is this correct?

I have already spent $$ on a towing hitch carrier for my walker/wheelchair!

Does any Toyota's Prius's have a Toyota approved towing rating? My 2002 Camry has a 2,000 lb. rating.

I think you need to contact Toyota directly and not rely upon "I have heard" from questionable sources.

BUT.....my guess is that there should not be a problem IF the thing being carried and the hitch together don't weigh more than a few hundred pounds.

AND the rest of your "load" won't exceed the total load capacity.

Thank you. I just sent an email to Toyota.com. and should get a reply soon {So they said) Ha!

On You-Tube several people have installed tow hitch carriers on Prius's, and the only problem seemed to be the low rear clearance. So I believe you are right that a light load should OK. But, I do wondered about the Warranty ?

I think you worry too much.

There should be little or no difference between putting 300 pounds on a rear hitch mount versus putting 300 pounds of people in the back seat.

Ha! Easy Rider, you are so right! I was born worrying, and as I slip towards death...I often worry whether the streets in Heaven are really paved with gold! Ha!

You have been a big help, and I appreciate it very much. I just returned from spending the first camping trip sleeping in my Prius...and I love the car!

For those Prius owners who might be interested...I did get a email from Toyota.com who DID NOT answered if any Prius's were approved for towing trailers,

They just stated my model wasn't. Does not matter because I'm no longer thinking along those lines...but I would like to know. :>)

This looks to me like you joined for the main purpose to spam-vertise for the towning company that you work for.

Please don't do this again.
